Andrew Sullivan has
many reasons for blogging. One of them is because of the immediacy of writing a
blog. If something happens, a blogger is able to immediately post their
thoughts on the web and share them with the entire world. They will always be
able to look back and see how they felt about the situation or event right
after it happened. They are not only able to quickly share their thoughts about
things but they are also able to hear the opinions of others about the same
ideas. Blogging does not require all of the time and energy that writing a
formal article or post does. There is no need to have it edited or revised. The
blogger says what they want to say how they want to say it and the public are
the ones who criticize or praise them. Bloggers are able to get feedback from
people from all over, who have all different types of beliefs and ideas. Often
times, bloggers’ own opinions change throughout the blog, sometimes because of
the feedback they receive. Blogging is a very personal thing and the readers
who follow blogs become very connected to the blogger. Sullivan calls the
relationship between a blogger and a reader a friendship, because through the
blog and the responses to it, a lot about a person can be revealed. Many people
think that blogging is hurting print media and formal writing, but Sullivan
argues that it encourages it. Blogs have their place, but nothing can truly
replace a real piece of writing. He also states that the excessive amount of
blogs on the web today, has made people realize how much traditional writing is
still needed in our world. Blogs are good for the media, but traditional writing
is still highly important as well.
It was interesting to read your post because I thought that blog is always open to public, it's hard to be a personal place to write. I've always thought that the word "personal" is used for diary or journal that I wouldn't show to others. But now I think your point makes more sense because people usually tend to reveal themselves in a personal space and be real, and that's why the blogger and readers are connected. And as a fan of reading many good writings, I am glad that you emphasized the importance of traditional writing.
